First Days in NYC
First Days in NYC Hi everyone. Im writing this entry from NYC, where I have Internet access at the office but not in my apartment. Its been rough, as you can imagine. (Not to mention my gas stove, which I dont know how to ignite. HELP!) Anyway, Im externing at an economic consulting company, along with 8 other MIT students. Apparently this office has the most MIT externs of any in the entire program NICE. There are freshmen, sophomores, and juniors here, and we come from all sorts of majors Course 2: MechE, Course 6: EECS, Course 14: Econ, Course 16: Aero/Astro, Course 18: Math, etc. The project Im on deals with mutual funds. Since so much of what is done here is litigation-based and strictly confidential, I cant discuss the details. After I left the office yesterday, I met up with some other MIT students who are working as externs on Wall Street, and we had dinner together in the Village (The Village? the village? The village? And was it east or west? East Village sounds right, but I remember going West to get there. GAHHH). We all got off from work pretty late, but decided to celebrate our first day on our jobs by going out to a restaurant in our work clothes. Along with another fifty thousand people in this city. Ill try to find out what else I can tell you about my job; if I am capped at this amount of information, Ill try to get some other MIT externs to write about what theyre researching, so youll get some idea of what we do here. Experts from NERA Economic Consulting provided the CBO with details of their evaluation of the report, and testified during a related Senate hearing in November 2005. The proposed Fairness in Asbestos Injury Resolution (FAIR) Act would establish a $140 billion trust fund to compensate victims of asbestos exposure and, in theory, end hundreds of thousands of asbestos injury lawsuits. However, the Bates White report had suggested that the cost of claims could be between $300 billion and $695 billion. In reaffirming its findings, the CBO cited NERAs analysis and echoed other themes of NERAs Senate testimony. In this article from The Electricity Journal, NERA Senior Consultant Hamish Fraser and AU Portfolio Optimization Manager Salvatore Lanza discuss key risk management considerations concerning the 2005 procurement. The authors analyze the risk characteristics of three approaches, and conclude that the most appropriate contract form for the AU would be a one-way CfD (contract for differences) arrangement in which an energy producer will receive a fixed price for capacity, less an adjustment factor to cover the difference between the actual market price of the energy at the time it is delivered and an agreed-upon fixed energy price. The authors also analyze the most appropriate parameters for and quantities of these contracts. Learn more: http://www.nera.com/publication.asp?p_ID=2697. In this article from Practical US/International Tax Strategies, NERA Vice President Dr. Stuart Harshbarger discusses the proposed changes to existing guidance as well as the steady stream of criticism from practitioners, attorneys, and pundits regarding numerous perceived deficiencies and potential perverse outcomes of the proposed regulations should they be implemented in their current form. Dr. Harshbarger argues that although much of the criticism does raise valid concerns, the IRS is adapting appropriately to the changing composition of US international trade flows, and that many other industrialized countries will soon be forced to follow the IRS lead. Essay on Prudence vs. Inclinations in Pride and Prejudice
Prudence vs. Inclinations in Pride and Prejudice In the novel, Pride and Prejudice, Elizabeth and Jane both achieve lasting happiness with their respective partners -- Darcy and Bingley, after a series of misjudgments, misunderstandings and obstacles. Indeed the heroines (Elizabeths) tumultuous relationship with Darcy forms the bulk of the novel, and the focal point of interest for the reader while Janes relationship with Bingley adds variety and interest to the novel. Elizabeths and Darcys relationship is filled with trials and tribulations, misjudgments and prejudice, eventually culminating in a blissful union of two complementary souls. Their relationship begins at an inauspicious starting point when theyâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦It is his prudent judgment and flexibility which temper his inclination to corn and criticize, such that he is able to recognize in Elizabeth a worthy wife and companion, despite her social standing [never so much of an obstacle as the familys behaviour] and Lydias elopment. Therefore, we must credit his prudent judgement for his remarkable change in opinion, which paves the way for his future happiness with Elizabeth. Unfortunately, Elizabeth displays little of her prudent judgement and astute assessment with regard to Darcy. It is for this singular reason that her relationship with Darcy is fraught with difficulty. After her first meeting with Darcy, Elizabeth determinedly preserves her prejudice against Darcy, even after repeated incidents which attest to his credibility of character, displaying uncharacteristic lack of intelligent and careful judgement. When Elizabeth meets Wickham, she is immediately won over by his appearance and suave charm, and is whole-heartedly inclined to believe his every word, simply because his very countenance may vouch for [his] being amiable, and there was truth in his looks. Police Brutality A Minority Group Concern Essay examples
Relations between the police and minority groups are a continuing problem in many multiracial societies. Surveys consistently document racial differences in perceptions of the police, with minorities more likely than whites to harbor negative views. (Weitzer and Tuch, Race and Perceptions of Police Misconduct, 2004) A great deal of society views law enforcement officers as heroic and honorable individuals, whose main purpose is to protect and serve the community. For many officers, this description is accurate, however for others; violence and brutality against innocent citizens is part of getting the job done. Therefore, individuals are treated unfairly by law enforcement solely based on their race. This type of mistreatment is unmerited and ultimately a violation of an individualââ¬â¢s rights. However, in many instances the court s do not find it a violation of their civil rights based on the fact that racial profiling is difficult to prove. Often, prosecutors are disinclined in bringing forth a case against officers on this particular matter. Officers are permitted to stop and search individuals and their vehicles whenever there is reasonable suspicion, however, there has been studies that prove that some law enforcement officers restrict these rights primarily to minority groups. Bowling and Phillips found that although there was no formal monitoring of use of these powers, it was concluded that it was particularly heavy use of these powers against ethnic minorities, largely of young black people (as cited in Sharp Atherton, 2007, p. 747) . Block 5 Skin Sensitivity Lab Hypothesis: The fingertips will be the most sensitive because they are used the most for touching things all of the time. The least sensitive areas of my body were my forearm and forehead. This partly supported my hypothesis because the fingertips were among the most sensitive but my shins were not the least sensitive. My results were fairly close to the rest of the class. The only two areas that were more than a point apart between my data and the class average were my palms and my nose. These areas were more sensitive to me than the rest of the class. Some areas might be more sensitive because they are involved with touching and bumping into things than others. For example my fingertips were far more sensitive than y forearms because I use them to touch things all the time and the touch receptors are more dense in them. It makes sense that touch receptors are more dense in areas that are involved in more touching than others. In places where a lot of bumping into things occurs such as the shins, touch receptors would be less dense because you wouldnââ¬â¢t want to feel all that pain all the time. Meissnerââ¬â¢s corpuscles are light touch receptors in the skin wh ich are prone to touch sensitivity. They are located just under the epidermis, which makes sense because they are closer to the outside so they can be more sensitive to light touch. Pacinian corpuscles are touch receptors located deeper in the dermis in the skin that respond to touch and pressure. They are good for feeling rough surfaces and determining vibration. The location of these receptors are deeper in the skin because they are designed to feel pressure so when something pushes down on the skin they can respond. The homunculus diagram is showing how the human body would be built if it was in proportion to the amount of sensory and motor brain power needed to control each part. The hands and mouth are bigger because they require more brain power to control. In the somatosensory cortex diagram the mouth and hands are also bigger which might explain why the skin in both of these areas is more sensitive than in other parts of the body. In both diagrams the bigger body parts require more control from the brain and have more sensitive skin. How to cite Skin Sensitivity, Essay examples

Election 2000 Essay Example For Students
Election 2000 Essay Every four years there is a presidential election. The elections are important to most Americans because it can change the future for many generations. There are many who run for this very important position, those who run get into to parties of those who will take office with them. There are third parties, and some very unusual parties, but it usually is narrowed down to Democratic and Republican. This year the two candidates are: George W. Bush for Republican and Al Gore for the Democratic Party. I have already turned eighteen and I am able to vote but I chose to wait a few until I feel I am mature enough to vote. If I were to vote, I would probably vote for Al Gore. I feel that he is qualified and should be president because he is the vice-president for Bill Clinton who is currently president. I agree with most of his issues concerning Drugs, Education and Juvenile crime, Gun Control, Civil and Gay Rights. We will write a custom essay on Election 2000 specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now The Clinton-Gore team has already started with spending more money on addressing the issues of drugs, for advertising and education and the drug use has supposedly gone down, this also addresses, that Gore would be able to pick up where Clinton left off. Gore also has plans for drug treatments for every addict who wants one. Gore also wants more involvement form the communities, which I believe would make a difference. Mandatory weekly drug testing for state prisoners and parolees, this can ensure that the convicts are staying drug free which can help clean up communities. Gore believes that after-school programs cut down on drug use. I agree with this, because I am in school and that can help some kids keep busy, and off the streets. I think this also would mean that he would not cut any programs but help promote the schools, and the future generations. An important issue that I absolutely agree with is a tax break for college graduates. I am about to go to college and already have a brother in college. Gore has plans for making the saving and borrowing process of college easier, tax breaks, student loans, grants, and a National Tuition Savings program to send college hopefuls to college. Gore has many plans to help improve schools in general and make them safer. Gore wants plans to hire more teachers, improve classrooms, and help failing schools, test teachers, he agrees with the union for vouchers, salary, and class sizes. As a student, I agree that t there are lack of teachers and classrooms. This can lead to failing schools and it may be too hard to turn them around and make them better. I also feel that teachers should get more pay because they are training the future of America, they help kids get through life and prepare them to go out and do good. I certainly think they should be paid more because of all the schooling they g o through just to teach. I think they should paid just as much as the professional athletes, doctors, and lawyers. Gore wants to transform the educational system within four years, which I think is a good goal. Gore also has a five point plan to have high school exit exams, which I think are important because some people get away with graduating and not know how to read or deal with everyday problems. The focus should be on character, discipline and safety. Some of the problems with this are to start by making secondary schools for juveniles who bring guns to school. I feel that gun control is very important and that everything can be worked out to benefit everyone. The focus should be on gun safety, and not on hunters and sportsmen, who already know how to handle guns. Homeowners and sportsmen should not have to suffer and should not be restricted. I feel that the guns should be kept out of wrong hands. Gore also plans on having mandatory background checks and child safety locks. He also passed the toughest gun control for the next thirty years. He wants plans for a state-run photo gun licensing. I feel that gun control is a touchy subject for some
